Free, Exclusive, Cancer Care Transport

The Berwick & District Cancer Support Group was founded in 1992 and our main service is to provide free transport to any cancer sufferer to all major hospitals in our area e.g. Wansbeck, Newcastle, Borders General and Edinburgh for cancer related appointments. The group is entirely made up of volunteers and we rely on the help and support of everyone in the community. Get in touch with us to find out more and help us by supporting the many events and activities that the community hold in aid of our charity.

Our drivers try to ensure a comfortable journey and should you need any further assistance please don’t hesitate to ask, as other practical help can be arranged if needed.

Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions we are operating a one client per car policy and measures have been put into place to ensure the safety and wellbeing of drivers and clients.

Coronavirus - COVID-19

Most Recent Update : 18 July 2021

The Berwick & District Cancer Support Group remains absolutely committed to the well-being and protection of our vulnerable clients and our volunteers.

Following the most recent government announcement with the easing of restrictions we have made the decision not to alter our current safety policy which remains one client per car.  Masks will still need to be worn at all times to protect our clients and our drivers.  Hand sanitiser will continue to be available in all our cars and our drivers will still always ensure all surfaces are wiped clean before and after each journey.

Thanks to a very generous donation from our friends at SWP Engineering Services Ltd all of our cars have been fitted with screens.  These will still remain in place.

Because we are currently unable to take more than one client at a time we ask that contact be made with our co-ordinators as soon as possible with the details of cancer related appointments, we will of course continue to do everything we possibly can to assist all our clients : 07780 795244
A statement from our Chair :

"The nature of our service and the fact we are dealing with clinically extremely vulnerable clients I feel it would be in all our interests to leave our 'Covid Safe' platform and procedures in place for the time being.  Our drivers and clients will continue to wear masks.  Our vehicle screens will remain in place and our cars will be sanitised at every opportunity."

For The Safety Of Our Passengers And Our Drivers All Our Cars Are Fitted With Screens And Have Hand Sanitiser. Kindly Note Masks Must Be Worn At All Times Whilst Using Our Cars.

We'd like to share with you a few words from one of our clients who very kindly gave us feedback about our current service:

I have been a client of Berwick Cancer Cars for over three and a half years. Using the cars has made such a difference in my cancer fight. The driver's are all so friendly and it's lovely to have a chat with them on the way to hospital which helps take my mind off the serious reason I'm visiting hospital for. Because I'm taken direct to the correct department, I don't have the added stress of worrying about parking and being late for appointments, all these things would add to an already stressful situation.

Obviously because of the Covid-19 pandemic, for a period, the cars couldn't operate and when I heard they were back running - and to be honest, with me being more at risk - I was quite apprehensive about using the transport. However, I was assured that they had taken more than adequate precautions for both the driver and myself and only recently used them for an appointment at The Freeman. The driver was wearing a mask and as advised by the coordinator, I was wearing one myself. There was a clear screen between the driver and myself in the back which obviously made it difficult to have a normal conversation but this was expected and I was glad to be given the chance to use this service once again and not rely on other people. I'm eternally grateful for the support Berwick Cancer Cars have given me and hope to continue using them in time to come.

C.K.

OK, YOU HAVE CANCER!

We would love to take this horrible disease away from you but unfortunately we can't.  What we can do though is make sure you don't have to worry about travelling the 120 miles for your appointments each time.

We are a lovely bunch of people who all live in Berwick (you may even know some of us), we have 5 top of the range comfortable cars,  a smiling, happy driver who will come and collect you, show you where you need to go, wait for you and bring you home safely again.  All for FREE!
