Berwick Cancer Cars first annual 5km walk raises over £1000!
Sunday 4th June 2023 saw our first annual 5k sponsored walk, and what a wonderful success it was! We were thrilled to welcome over 80 participants of all ages at our new building on Tweed Street. Berwick Cancer Cars Committee volunteer Rowena opened up the Tweed Street kitchen, with help from volunteer supporter Gwen, and offered refreshments to thirsty walkers – here we took the opportunity to proudly show off our new premises.
The event allowed walkers to choose from one, two or three scenic walk routes in and around town, each of around five kilometres in length and showing off the beauty of Berwick. Route maps were provided to everyone and a handful of brave souls managed all three walks with two of the ladies using the routes as a warm up for their Great North Run later this summer.
We also met many four-legged friends who enjoyed the walkies almost as much as their owners. Among these were Berwick Cancer Cars drivers John Patterson and Ian Beresford who were accompanied by their dogs Ruby and Scooby, and not forgetting Chair Andrew Smith’s best friend Dave – maybe we need doggy medals next year!!
At the end of the walk we presented beautiful medals to each of the participants, very kindly donated to us by Jason at GE-Awards (https://ge-awards.co.uk).
The 5k walk was the idea of Berwick Cancer Cars Committee volunteer Janet Punton who said of the event afterwards “We are so happy to say that we raised over £1000 on the day. This very generous donation allows us to continue to offer our free transport services to cancer patients in Berwick and District. Here’s to next years event!”
