The Queens Award for Voluntary Service
The Berwick and District Cancer Support Group is pleased to announce that it has been awarded “The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service (QAVS)”. This is highest award given to volunteer groups across the UK for outstanding work done in their local communities for the benefit of others.
The annual Award – the equivalent of an MBE – was created by Her Majesty in 2002 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of her Coronation This prestigious award recognises the exceptional work done by volunteer groups in their communities.
This UK national honour sets the benchmark for excellence in volunteering. Each nomination is judged on the benefits given to the local community and its standing within that community. Cllr. Paul Jackson Chair of Trustees says “this is a tremendous honour for the charity and recognises not only the exceptional work of our volunteers, but the standing that it has in the community at large. Without the extraordinary level of community support Cancer Cars receives we would not exist.”
The Awards which are announced on 2 June each year come with a certificate signed by the Queen, together with an engraved commemorative crystal globe. As Andrew Smith Chair of the Volunteer’s Committee said “The last two years have been particularly challenging and stressful for the charity, but we have been overwhelmed by the dedication of our volunteers and the kindness of our supporters. To receive this award in our 30th anniversary year, is really the icing on the cake.”
Our award shall be officially presented during The Lord-Lieutenant’s Garden Party at Alnwick Castle on 15th June 2022.
Sir Martyn Lewis, QAVS Chair :
“I warmly congratulate all the outstanding voluntary groups who have been rewarded with a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service this year. The level of commitment and innovation shown by these volunteers is truly impressive. We owe a debt of gratitude to them, and the countless others who give up their free time regularly to improve the lives of others in their community.”
